Thanks for taking the time to reply. When we first got the MSP-FET I recall having to do some trickery with the MSP430.dll file. I have a folder with Versions 3.2.1.8, 3.4.0.20, 3.4.3.4 and 3.8.1.0. I can't remember what the exact issue was, but it was for CCSV6. Our MSP-FET is Rev 2.0.5 hardware and serial number 17xxxx. We have the same setup as on pages 21 of the SLAU278AA document for our MSP430F5659 and MSP430F5529 devices. BUT we do not have any capacitance on the TDIO line. Just a simple CRO probe on TDIO or TCK is enough to get the communication working. Something is very marginal. Maybe I need to look at the situation that the newer MSP-FET is actually working correctly and the older FET just happened to work well. One of our first jobs with MSP-FET was on a ADS1292EVM. I've just searched the schematics and while there is a place for a capacitor on TDIO, there is not one fitted. Thanks.
