Agreed - poster appears bit stuck, "Back to the past." I2C & SPI (were) the (sole) modes to transact w/ (external) 8 pin memory devices... Once that memory (or pseudo memory) is ensconced w/in the MCU - use of the (always) delightful ACK/NAK challenge is avoided... As you well note - 1/2 page read of MCU manual dispels such notion... RTFM & KISS - perhaps in that order - prove their worth daily...
